World Heritage Sites are natural or man-made sites that define the standards in our perception of the natural world and our civilization. The institution of World Heritage aims to educate people about respectful coexistence, by promoting the appreciation of different cultures around the world. By highlighting the outstanding universal value of masterpieces and unique parts of the natural environment, it also promotes the need to preserve such assets for future generations and to protect them from physical, aesthetic and conceptual threats.
The proposal to celebrate World Heritage was first made on 18 April 1982 at the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) symposium in Tunisia. This suggestion was subsequently approved by the Executive committee, as well as by the UNESCO General Conference in 1983. |

World Heritage Day on the 18th April is celebrated around the globe, and offers an opportunity to raise the public's awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve it. Here in India we are seeking co-operation amongst all to look at how World Heritage can be used to promote and support Sustainable Urbanization & Livelihoods said Dr Piyush Ranjan Rout, Co Founder Cum Executive Director of Local Governance Network.
Dr Rout further elaborated that “We're not asking everyone to Save the World; Just Its Greatest Places. World Heritage sites belong to us all, and depend on all of us. So LGNet is gathering a momentum in identifying & facilitating for World Heritage Sites recognition to help these irreplaceable treasures continue to inspire future generations”.
At present there are 962 properties listed as World Heritage Sites forming part of the cultural and natural heritage, which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value; these include 745 cultural, 188 natural and 29 mixed properties. Further there are 38 properties which the World Heritage Committee has decided to include on the List of World Heritage is in danger.
